BEST ZOMBIE KILL:
Richard pwns a group of zombies with Nunchucks!
It's interesting to review a movie that was so obviously made to simply make money off the hype of another upcoming movie. And there are a few, a small few, that might argue that it wasn't made for that sole purpose. Sure, we've seen 'The Omega Man', which is an earlier film based on the novel 'I Am Legend', but that was years ago and a completely different take on the story. In this case, the blockbuster hit 'I Am Legend' came out and that very same year, 'I Am Omega' was released straight to video. (Combining the names 'I Am Legend' and 'The Omega Man')
This is an Asylum release. Which many believe are VERY well known for trying to make a quick buck off the hype of other movies. These are called Mockbusters. How do they do it? By simply making a poor quality flick that goes straight to video at the same time that a popular movie is going to be released on DVD. Need some examples? We'd thought you'd never ask! When Transformers was going to be released, Asylum put out Transmorphers. When Snakes on a Plane was released, so was Asylum's Snakes on a Train, Alien vs. Predator had it's Alien vs. Hunter. Pirates of the Caribbean? Pirates of Treasure Island. We could go on... but let's not.
All of that being said, this isn't actually a terrible flick. We've heard, and agree with, the statement 'It's probably the best Asylum movie there is'. Now, that doesn't mean it's great, it's just not terrible. There are still some major issues with this flick. It's dialogue, for one, is in need of serious work. There is one point in the film where the word 'compadre' is said nearly 10 times in 10 minutes. It gets very annoying... Another great example is excerpt from the film's dialogue:
"Son of a Bitch!"
"Son of a Bitch!"
Two different people say the same line on after another in two different locations. We're not sure if it was meant to show the characters similar reactions to similar situations, but it didn't come off like that. It seems more like the script was written in different chunks and edited together forgetting those two phrases were going to be right after each other.
The acting in this movie is sporadic. While the main characters are portrayed well, the rest of the cast isn't at the same level. Throughout we have to be tortured with a lame tough guy facade or a painful hysterical woman.
This flick does have this going for it. The zombies are really creepy! They're dripping gore and they look like they have been mutated enough to cause some serious damage. They are the fast moving type, and don't go down too easily. Definitely some of the more serious looking undead creatures we've seen.
All in all... this isn't a terrible flick, yes we've already said that, but it's the best way to put it. There's quite a bit of action and some cool zombies, but there's also some lame portrayals, cheesy dialogue and a sub-par plot. So it's right in the middle. We may have been impressed because we were expecting so much less, but maybe not. This is a definite recommendation for zombie fans, although simple horror fans could pass on it.
